Kid Business

How to explain what a business is to a kid

Children already know people who run businesses: the shop, the barber, the neighbour who mows lawns. The idea to hand them first is the simplest one, and the lessons below start there.

What the first lesson says

This is the actual text from lesson 1, “A Business Solves a Problem”, word for word:

Why would anyone give you money? Because you solve a problem for them! Thirsty? You sell lemonade. Done.
Every business starts with a problem. Messy yard? Rake it. Dog needs a walk? Walk it. Someone needs it done — you do it.

A question from that lesson to try together

A business is something that…

Answer: Solves a problem and gets paid for it — Exactly! Solve a problem → get paid. That's it.

Try it at home

On your next errand, point at three places that sell something and ask your child what problem each one solves for you.
