Time & Planning

How to teach kids to tell time and plan a day

A clock face is a lot to take in at once. It helps to start with what each hand is for, and only then move on to planning what fits into a day.

What the Batch unit “Tell Time & Plan Your Day” covers

Read clocks, plan your day. It is unit 1 of the Time & Planning track and has 5 lessons and 52 cards:

  1. Read the Clock
  2. Hours & Minutes
  3. Parts of the Day
  4. How Long Does It Take?
  5. Boss Level: Plan Your Day

What the first lesson says

This is the actual text from lesson 1, “Read the Clock”, word for word:

A clock has two hands. The SHORT hand shows the hour. The LONG hand shows the minutes.
When the short hand points to 3 and the long hand points up to 12, it is 3 o'clock.

A question from that lesson to try together

Which hand shows the hour?

Answer: The short hand — Yes — the short hand points to the hour!

Try it at home

Before the next outing, ask your child to read the clock at the time you plan to leave and to point to where the long hand will be then.
