How to explain AI to kids in plain words
Children meet AI long before they can say what it is. A good first conversation keeps it plain: what it is, what it is not, and where they have already seen it.

What the Batch unit “Meet AI” covers
What AI really is. It is unit 1 of the AI Explained track and has 5 lessons and 51 cards:
- What AI Really Is
- It Learns From Examples
- Ask It Clearly
- Don't Trust It Blindly
- Boss Level: Smart About AI
What the first lesson says
This is the actual text from lesson 1, “What AI Really Is”, word for word:
AI is a computer program that learned to do a job — like guessing words or finding cats in photos.
AI is NOT alive. It has no feelings and doesn't truly 'know' things — it makes really good guesses.
A question from that lesson to try together
AI is…
- A clever computer program
- A living robot friend
- A kind of animal
Answer: A clever computer program — Right! It's a program that learned a job.
Try it at home
Next time a device suggests a video or finishes a word for you, stop and ask your child whether they think it knows what you want or is making a guess.
