How to teach kids to look after the planet
Big ideas about the environment can feel far away to a child. Small, repeatable actions at home are a more reachable place to start, and the lessons below begin with exactly those.

What the Batch unit “Planet Patrol” covers
Patrol the planet with Ranger the Raccoon. It is unit 1 of the The World track and has 5 lessons and 53 cards:
- Reduce, Reuse, Recycle
- Save Water & Power
- Where Trash Goes
- Small Daily Habits
- Boss Level: Review
What the first lesson says
This is the actual text from lesson 1, “Reduce, Reuse, Recycle”, word for word:
Meet Ranger the Raccoon! He patrols Earth using his 3 super moves: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle. 🦝
Reduce means using LESS stuff in the first place. Fewer wrappers, less waste!
A question from that lesson to try together
Which R should you try FIRST?
- Recycle
- Reduce
- Reuse
Answer: Reduce — Yes! Reduce comes first — use less stuff from the start.
Try it at home
Look in your recycling or rubbish bin together and ask your child which things in it could have been used less, used again, or recycled.
Play the lesson
