How to teach kids about the solar system
The Sun is the easiest place to begin, because every child has seen it. From there the planets, the Moon and the changing day and night are all one story about our neighbourhood in space.

What the Batch unit “Our Solar System” covers
Blast off with Batch the fox. It is unit 1 of the Space Cadets track and has 5 lessons and 53 cards:
- The Sun
- The Planets
- The Moon
- Day, Night & Seasons
- Boss Level: Review
What the first lesson says
This is the actual text from lesson 1, “The Sun”, word for word:
Blast off! I'm Batch the fox. Today we explore our star — the Sun! 🦊🚀
The Sun is a giant ball of hot, glowing gas. It gives Earth light and heat.
A question from that lesson to try together
What does the Sun give Earth?
- Light and heat
- Snow
- Loud music
Answer: Light and heat — Yes! The Sun's light and heat keep us warm and let us see.
Try it at home
On a clear evening, step outside and ask your child where the Sun was this morning and where it is now, then talk about why that might be.
Play the lesson
