How to teach kids about community helpers
Community can sound like a big, faraway word. Children already live in one, starting with their own family, and the lessons below begin there before moving out to helpers, rules and pitching in.

What the Batch unit “How Communities Work” covers
Explore neighborhoods, helpers, and rules with Ranger the Raccoon. It is unit 2 of The World track and has 5 lessons and 52 cards:
- What Is a Community?
- Community Helpers
- Rules & Why We Have Them
- Pitching In
- Boss Level: Review
What the first lesson says
This is the actual text from lesson 1, “What Is a Community?”, word for word:
Meet Ranger the Raccoon! 🦝 Today he's exploring communities — groups who help each other.
Your family is your very first community. You help each other every day.
A question from that lesson to try together
What is a community?
- A type of weather
- A group of people who help each other
- A single animal
Answer: A group of people who help each other — Yes! A community is a group of people who help each other.
Try it at home
On a walk or a drive, ask your child to spot people whose work helps your neighbourhood, and talk about what would change if nobody did that job.
Play the lesson
Open Batch in the browser, choose The World, and start with Unit 1, Planet Patrol, lesson “Reduce, Reuse, Recycle”. Units unlock in order, so Unit 2, “How Communities Work”, opens once the units before it are finished. Whether an account is needed is answered in the FAQ.
